Different Cleaning Needs: Hand and Machine-Made Rugs

    Last updated 2 months ago

If you’ve ever had the misfortune of experiencing what happens when you use improper cleaning methods to clean a rug, then you know the devastation that mistakes can cause. If you haven’t experienced an Oriental rug cleaning disaster, consider yourself lucky indeed. Rugs have very different cleaning needs depending on how they are manufactured and what materials are used in their construction.

    Hand Knotted Rugs

Hand knotted rugs are painstakingly crafted fiber by fiber. Expert weavers tie each individual tuft into a warp yarn. Threads are then weft yarn through the entire width, only to begin the process all over again on the next row. Because of their construction, hand knotted rugs are impressively resilient. They can be beaten out to remove the dust and washed to restore their brightness.

    Hand Tufted Rugs

Hand tufted rugs are similar in appearance to hand knotted rugs, but their construction is decidedly different. Rather than tying each tuft to a yarn, a rug maker pushes yarn through a fabric and applies glue to the back when the pushing is complete. A backing material is usually added to complete the look. Hand tufted rugs are much more fragile than hand knotted rugs, and their glue can deteriorate over time. For that reason, special care must be taken when cleaning hand tufted rugs.

    Machine-Made Rugs

Machine-made rugs range in quality from that which rivals a hand knotted rug to extremely poor construction. For that reason, it is impossible to know the best cleaning method for machine-made rugs without being familiar with machine method used. The best practice for cleaning machine-made rugs is to consult with a carpet cleaning expert for advice, or simply hire a carpet cleaner to take care of the job for you.
